Measuring for your custom made blinds.

Measuring blinds to get the perfect fit is very easy but also very important. Follow this guide to ensure that when your blinds arrive they fit perfectly.

You will need
1. A metal tape measure
You’ll want one that reads in Millimetres (mm), as all our measurements are based in millimetres

2. Pencil or pen

Let's get started

Firstly take a look at the window or door that the blinds is going to be fitted to.It can generally only go in few positions.

The  position the blind is installed in is often dictated by the type of window, the window or latches and how deep the window frame is.

Inside the frame
(Inside Fit)

This is where the blind fits inside your window frame

Advantages 

  • The blind does not project out into the room as it is kept within the existing window frame
  • The blind is close to the glass giving better insulation

Disadvantages

  • There will be small light gaps around the blind

Outside the frame
(Face or Outside fit)

This is where the blind is fitted to front of the frame often across the top of the architrave around the window.

Advantages

  • The blind overlaps the window frame reducing the amount light coming through the sides of the blind
  • Covers the window completely

Disadvantages

  • The blind encroaches into the room further and may look less aesthetically appealing

Where possible we suggest an inside fit...

Where possible we suggest an inside fit as it keeps the blind close to the glass, gives better insulation and looks better.  In some case due to your window or door handles this may not be possible

If you order blinds as Inside Fit, when we make the blinds we will take small deductions off the blind width and drop to make sure they fit inside the frame you have measured. Note that measurements you provide include all fittings – in case of roller blinds, the fabric is approximately 35mm narrower than your measurements to allow for the control mechanism and end brackets.

If you order blinds as Face Fit – we wont take any deductions of the measurements you provide, but note that measurements you provide include all fittings – in case of roller blinds, the fabric is approximately 35mm narrower than your measurements to allow for the control mechanism and end brackets.

Measuring for an Inside Fit

Width

We suggest you take measurements in two locations within the frame as some windows may not be square

  • One across the top inside the window frame
  • One across the bottom inside the window frame

Always supply us with the smallest measurement of the two.
Remember to measure to the nearest millimeter.

Drop

We suggest you take measurements in two locations within the frame as some windows may not be square

  • One on the left inside the window frame
  • One on the right inside the window frame

Always supply us with the smallest measurement of the two.
Remember to measure to the nearest millimeter and from the position the blind will be installed in.

 

Below is a quick reference showing the depth of the frame required to fit the blind fully inside the window frame

Aluminium 25mm Venetian – 27mm depth

Aluminum 50mm Venetian – 57mm depth

Timber Venetian – 75mm (this includes the fascia/pelmet)

Ultrawood Venetian – 75mm (this includes the fascia/pelmet)

Roller blind – 55mm

Vertical Blind – 60mm

Honeycomb Blinds – 45mm

Measuring for an Outside Fit (Facefit)

Width

We suggest you take measurements in two locations on the outside of the frame – many people measure from the outside of the architrave on one side to the outside of the architrave on the opposite side to get their width measurement.

  • One across the top of the window
  • One across the bottom of the window

Always supply us with the smallest measurement of the two.
Remember to measure to the nearest millimeter.

Drop

We suggest you take measurements in two locations on the outside of the frame – many people measure from the outside of the architrave on the top of the window down to the window sill or to a position below the window where they wish the blind to stop.

Remember to measure to the nearest millimeter.

Important Note:
Make sure you look out for any obstructions, remember that blinds can be lower and lifted and some also tilt open and closed make sure there are no obstructions where you want to position the blind that may get in the way when you operate the blind.

Other things to consider

Control Side
All blinds have controls on the left or right to operate the blind, lift and lower and tilt, so you need to decide which will be the most convenient side for the controls to go on.  It is your choice but consider which side will be easiest to operate the blind from.

 

Control Length
Blinds a commonly operated by plastic wands or chains and to make it easy for you they can be made certain lengths.  We are not all 6ft tall so work out by standing next to the window what would be the ost convenient length of the control for you to operate the blind from.

Control length is measured from the top of window down, So if it is an inside fit place your measuring tape on the inside of the frame at the top and measure down finding a measurement that will make the blind easy to operate.

 

Final things to remember
You are responsible for your measurements make sure they are accurate, if you have a woopsie and get the measurements wrong we can alter the blind in most cases but this is an extra charge for doing do that you don’t want to have to pay, so focus on getting the correct measurements the first time.
